The helmet is made from a mid-density knit foam chord and panels of hard shelled high-density foam. This breakup allows for the helmet to be folded along its seams. Due to it's knit / woven construction there are no adhesives used.

Knit Helmet

School project – was tasked to create a bicycle helmet. I chose to try and reinterpret the traditional manufacturing process of a bike helmet for the casual biker.

The helmet is made from a mid-density knit foam chord and panels of hard shelled high-density foam. This breakup allows for the helmet to be folded along its seams. Due to it's knit / woven construction there are no adhesives used.

Pattern Process

In order to determine the final helmet form I first started working with small scale models knit with wool. After getting a general idea of pattern and form I moved to knitting full-size models using 1/4" backer rod and large hand made needles.
